The roots of Women’s day can be traced back to 1908, when 150000 women marched through New York City demanding voting rights, better pay and shorter working hours. The following year, the first National Woman’s Day was observed in the US on 28 February by a declaration by the Socialist Party of America.
These honorable female personalities of our society have inspired me throughout my journey in creating Sambav and making it possible! I salute the role played by women in medicine throughout history.
It is a matter of great honor to remember the achievements of the women who selflessly served in the field of medicine, to help in lessening the suffering of human beings who need no recognition as such but are the real forgotten heroes whose hard work and dedication has led to the tremendous advancements in the medical field without whose contribution, things wouldn’t have been the way they are today.
Here are a few achievements of some remarkable women achievers in the field of medicine:
Anandibai Gopalrao Joshi was the first Indian female medical doctor who obtained a degree in medicine in the USA in the year 1886, it marked the beginning of female medical practitioners in India.
Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy was an eminent medical practitioner of the 19th century and a remarkable social reformer and a freedom fighter. She worked for the abolishment of brothels and immoral child trafficking. She established the famous Adyar Cancer Institute and dedicated her life for the treatment of cancer patients.
Trota of Salerno was a famous 12th century Italian physician who collected many of her empirical practices in writing.
Maude Abbott’s exceptional and a thorough classification of congenital heart defects paved the way to the future of cardiac surgery.
Gerti T. Cori was the first woman who won the Nobel Prize in the category of medicine or physiology in 1947.
These honorable female personalities of our society have inspired me throughout my journey in creating Sambav and making it possible! I salute the role played by women in medicine throughout history, we may also note that their activities and contributions are a reminder for the modern day mothers who have the huge responsibility of raising the future generation and it is time that all the women out there understand their great role in keeping themselves and their families healthy and safe.
