Benign Migratory Glossitis or Geographic Tongue, is a harmless disease that appears to be map like structures or patterns forming on the surface of the tongue. It is inflammatory in nature and may look like a serious disease, but is completely harmless with a few minor side effects. It is not associated with any underlying health condition or serious life threatening symptom. Red and white patches in irregular shapes on your tongue indicates that you have a geographic tongue.
Geographic tongue causes pain and increases your sensitivity to foods and is a great deal of discomfort. The problem may resolve on its own but will come back again later.
This geographic tongue may be a result of psoriasis and is more likely to hit patients who are already suffering from psoriasis. However, there is no definite reason or cause to determine the occurrence of this disease. It usually appears when parts of the tongue have missing layers of papillae. There are no symptoms of this disease and hence, there is no prevention. It may also be genetically passed on if any of your family members have a history of this disease.
How to Recognize Geographic Tongue?
- Irregular shaped patches or lesions on the surface of the tongue
- Changes in the places or sides of tongue
- Shape and size changes
- Uncomfortable drinking hot or cold fluids or eating spicy foods
- Burning sensations on the tongue
If you have those red patches in irregular shapes and places on your tongue for more than two weeks, it is recommended that you consult a doctor and ensure it’s not any other serious condition. You need not be afraid if your doctor confirms that it’s just geographic tongue as it is harmless.
