With growing economy and industrialization, we see more and more people having trouble sleeping at nights. This is an ugly fact that the introduction of foreign based companies in India have led people aged between 21 and 50 to work at nights and sleep during the day.
Naps during noon might improve your memory whereas, long-term naps during day time will lead to loss of memory
Did you know that every human body has a hormone called melatonin which needs to be synchronized with days and nights? Researchers advise people to go camping for 1 week without electronics to reset our biological body clock and synchronize our melatonin hormones.
There is a myth in our society that we require 6-8 hours of sleep to complete your sleeping cycle. This is not completely true. We need 6-8 hours of sleep during the night to complete the day’s cycle. The day time sleep is just a fundamental replacement. There is a need to stop this habit in our society as this disease is slowly eating away our brain.
There are many problems associated with this sleeping habit. Firstly, let us understand what happens when melatonin is released during the day time. In humans, melatonin plays an important role in the regulation of sleep cycles. Its production is influenced by the detection of light and dark by the retina of the eye.
The melatonin will cease its production when the retina detects light and is stimulated in the absence of light. During the day, melatonin levels are low because large amount of light is detected by the retina. In fact, melatonin helps in modulating certain functions of the immune system. On the other hand, the serotonin hormone is released during the day time only when our body gets a restful sleep at night.
Serotonin hormone is responsible for body’s natural happiness and increase relaxation and positivity thinking. But, if the release of serotonin is inhibited due to day time sleep then the effect of serotonin is crossed. The brain will stop functioning normally and there might be serious mood, sleep, and appetite problems in an individual habituated to sleep during the day.
There are various researches done on shift work employees to identify problems occurring due to night shifts and they are:
- Gastric trouble
- Diarrhea
- Insomnia
- Depression
- Mood swings
- Decreased quality of life
- General feeling of being unwell
Some people are undergoing treatments at sleep clinics due to their naturally occurring sleep problems. But, there are many people who are suffering because they think it is the right passage in their career and is a financial necessity. The truth is being awake all night is taking a serious toll on their health.
Sambav reminds you that it is not too late for people who want to change for betterment of their health – “Better late than sorry.” Your health is an obvious sign that you need to change your schedule and follow the nature. Naps during noon might improve your memory whereas, long-term naps during day time will lead to dementia (loss of memory).
