World Earth Day-Say No To Plastic

“Earth Day should encourage us to reflect on what we are doing to make our planet a more sustainable and livable place.” (Scott Peters)

Every year, on April 22, Earth Day commemorates the birth anniversary of the modern environmental movement dating back to the year 1970. That year big cities all over the world first realized the impact of significant automobiles pumping leaded gas into the atmosphere. Industry oozed soot and factory waste, challenging legal repercussions and the robust media. The polluted environment was perceived as the whiff of development. ‘Environment’ was a word that was seen more in academic books than on the front page of a newspaper. Earth Day 1970 sparked off raising awareness, channeling the people’s energies and putting environmental concerns on the front page.

Let us come together to make our planet Greener & Healthier On this EarthDay & Always.

Now a day, everything is being packed in the plastic bags. Synthetic bag productions are increasing day by day which is a very shameful condition for us as these materials are undegradable. The first celebration of the Earth Day took place in the US on 22nd of April in 1970 to mark the environmental movement as a significant matter of fact. Students group from the US College campuses had participated in protesting for the environmental deterioration to increase the public awareness. Another group opposed to the oil spills, toxic dumps, air and water pollution due to industrialization, raw sewage, use and production of pesticides and many more. Since then, 22nd of April was continued to be celebrated as Earth Day officially.

Stop polluting, start thinking

This earth day, we need to create an environment of public participation such as:

  • Firstly, building a carbon-free tomorrow founded on renewable energy that will get rid the dependence on fossil fuels.
  • Secondly, we need to educate ourselves to consume responsibly and sustainably and generate a new green economy that carves out a better financial life for the poor by creating large-scale green employment. Since the early 2000s, CNG vehicles running on the streets of India have been a significant initiative, which has significantly curtailed the pollution levels in Delhi and surrounding cities.

In 2013, a study on non-smokers revealed that Asian-Indians have 30% lower lung function when compared to Europeans. And this is because of fossil fuel burn and traffic congestion. In cities like Bangalore, around 50% of children suffer from asthma. This is due to the following reasons:

  • Poor designs of inter-city expressways
  • Intra-city divided lanes
  • Poor enforcement of traffic laws
  • Increase in population increasing the number of vehicles per kilometer
