More than a 100 years ago, a battle in northern Italy sparked an idea that has changed the world. On 24 June 1859, a young Geneva businessman by the name Henry Dunant witnessed horrifying suffering and agonies following the battle of Solferino. He mobilized the civilian population, mainly women and girls to care for the wounded irrespective of their role in the conflict. He secured them with the necessary materials and supplies and helped in the establishment of temporary hospitals.

Taking immediate action and applying the appropriate techniques, while waiting for professional help, can considerably reduce deaths and injuries, and the impact of disasters and everyday emergencies.

In 2018, we are still at war with domestic accidents. This blog will help the viewers to understand how important it is to provide immediate First Aid at the accident site.

The need for humanitarian action is still as vital today as it was in the earlier ages. Millions of people are hurt or killed by injuries every year due to inadequate response or lack of timely assistance. Taking immediate action and applying the appropriate techniques, while waiting for professional help, can considerably reduce deaths and injuries, and the impact of disasters and everyday emergencies.

First aid is not a replacement for emergency services. It is a vital initial step for providing effective and swift action that helps to reduce serious injuries and improve the chances of survival.

Most of the common domestic accidents that occur daily are electric shock, burns, poisoning, choking, drowning, loss of consciousness, health related diseases and so on. Every domestic accident exposes its victim to physical and mental stress, loss of earning capacity, and productivity. Children and people belonging to lower socio-economic status, with underlying medical conditions, residing in poor housing conditions and absence of proper safety measures are at greater risk of domestic accidents.

Here are few useful first aid tips:

  • In case of bleeding because of cuts, stop bleeding by applying alcohol or its products.
  • In case of any burns, applying toothpaste has a soothing effect before treating it with appropriate medicine.
  • If you see any one with nose bleed, hold their head facing the sky or roof for few minutes.
  • In case of electric shock, stabilize by making them rest for few minutes.
  • For insect and animal bites, clean the area with soap then administer tetanus injection
